Corn No. 49 from 2012

Just when I thought I didn't have anything more to say about Corn, I was asked to participate in a three woman show come January 2017.  I was asked if I would be interested in creating some new Corn pieces for the show.

I said yes, all the while thinking I'm done with Corn, why am I saying yes?

Well it turns out I'm not done with Corn. The subconscious wants what it wants, and it was clearly wanting Corn.

Yesterday I managed to purchase the stretched canvas upon which my new pieces shall be mounted, and for a really good price.

Upon that purchase all sorts of imagery of finished pieces popped into my head. This time I'm going for a more earthy approach, using actual soil, clays, ochers, and earth pigments in combination with indigo, rust, and natural dyes (yes I'll be dyeing with corn husks, leaves, cobs, etc, with just a touch of digitally printed fabrics that lends to the modern digital tech age today's farms are becoming!

Final Leg

The final leg towards my solo show, finishing up four pieces in the Prairie Series.

I cut each of these panels off of their canvas stretched frames and cut them down to size, which varies, as I was unhappy with them.  With the addition of more stitching, and in some cases more silk fabric overlays, and then binding off the edges with zig zag stitching, they will then be re-mounted to 18x24 inch stretched canvas.  More pics later.

3x5 inch gessoed canvas with an alcohol transferred image.

Second coat of gesso, this time over the image transfer.  Once the gesso is dry I'll paint an image to go with the carrot.

Mixed Media Painting Workshop

Spend the afternoon trying a variety of techniques using paint!

In this workshop students will learn how to combine various wet materials to create a painting. Students will work with acrylics, water color media, emulsions, opaque pens, papers, etc.   This is a great opportunity to try some new techniques and media without having to committ to a six week class!

The class will be held Fisher Art Center in Marshalltown, IA

Pale Horse the Prophecy -

I was going to add more paint to the surface but have since decided on some loose running stitches and some attachments. I started this piece in 1996 it's paint on canvas I've finally decided on how I want to stitch the piece and what I'd like to attach to the surface. I'll have John build me a frame for the piece when I'm done

Cardine

I started this piece sometime around 1999, working on Prairie Potholes No. 15 last night reminded me that I that this piece was still in progress. Cardine needs his eye lashes and then I need to finish the scene on the lower canvas I have some barbed wire some place to put on the lower half of the canvas section.

The quilt needs to be stitched to the canvas base, however I've decided to add some beads and other embellishements to the surface first.

I'm thinking of adding a treatment to my base canvas, well the edges anyway, like the canvas in the above picture. I started the above piece two years ago and got wrapped up in moving the shop and never finished the thing. It has vintage paint by number pots glued to the surface, somewhere I have around here I have the images and collage items to add to the surface and then it gets placed inside of an altered clock body.

The thing about hanging onto a piece long enough is eventually you realize that it needs more and in this case PP No. 15 needs dimension, dimension in the form of beads etc. The base canvas covered frame needs more paint, I missed a few areas on the edging where it's most likely to be seen.
