Compost Dyed Silk Fabric

I am just beginning to explore some of these ideas and am happy to come across your blog. I want to create some fabric banners for an upcoming art installation. I plan to use cheesecloth as this fits with the theme of the piece. I would like to create a subtle, colorful, overall effect using foodstuffs, compost, and rust. I am not so concerned about longevity of the fabric for this purpose, although it will need to be somewhat lightfast for that month. Any suggestions to where to begin? I live in Vermont so not sure the compost is a viable approach this time of year. Thanks!
